About Me
I have a long-held passion for working with students at all levels of their university career, from the first-semester freshman to the most advanced doctoral student. I hold a Ph.D. in Hispanic Cultural Studies from Michigan State University, as well as a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Michigan University. I have over fifteen years experience teaching and three years experience working in a university counseling center. In 2005 I discovered coaching, which I felt provided the ideal vehicle for truly supporting students, personally, professionally, and academically. Having worked both in the classroom and as a counselor, I bring a unique set of skills and experiences to my coaching work. As a teacher I understand how to help students move forward and achieve greater academic success, whether you are an undergraduate who wants better grades, or a graduate student struggling to finish that dissertation. As a counselor I am keenly aware of the impact that our personal circumstances can sometimes have on those academic and professional aspirations. It is my goal as your coach to bring those two facets of your life together to help you to achieve greater academic success, and to support you as you pursue your goals and dreams.
Prior to working as a coach, I taught Spanish for nearly twenty years, most recently at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. I am currently located in Carbondale Illinois, where I live with my husband and a very spoiled Maine Coon cat. In addition to my coaching work, I also teach the first-year seminar at Southern Illinois University, where I help first-year university students learn many of the skills they need to be successful in college, such as test-taking, note-taking, time-management, goal-setting, and career planning. In my nonwork life, I enjoy reading, travel, singing, and playing the harp and the guitar.
